What Is a Credit Report?

Credit history or credit report is, in many countries, a record of an individual’s or company’s past borrowing and repaying, including information about late payments and bankruptcy. The term “credit reputation” can either be used synonymous to credit history or to credit score. Getting a credit report is a good idea if you are not sure about what your credit score may be. If you are planning on applying for a loan, buying a car, putting a down payment on a house, or simply applying for a credit card, you are going to want to know what kind of credit you have beforehand, and a credit report is the only sure way of knowing.

Getting a free credit report has becme easy. Thanks to the FTC as every American is now able to get one free credit report per year — with no further obligations and no subscription to cancel. There are a number of different sites today that offer you a credit report upon signing up. But my advice before getting a credit report is to spend a few minutes researching different credit report sites. Don’t be fooled by offers of free credit reports, because there are likely strings attached.

Additionally, there is always the danger that the site you are signing up on is a complete fraud designed just for collecting peoples personal information for illegal use. Looking into it a little before signing up for a credit report may save you a lot of headaches later on. Otherwise, you can get your credit report from one of the 3 credit bureaus – Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion. Some major resellers of the 3 bureau reports are myFICO.com and PrivacyGuard.com.

Once you get your credit reports and you discover that your FICO score is really low you should immediately try and raise this number by disputing the accuracy of the negatives in your reports. But how do you do this? I suggest you take a look at a report written by an attorney called “the attorney´s guide to credit repair” You´ll find sample letters you can use to send off to the bureaus. Take action as soon as you get your reports!
